The National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) is a poverty alleviation initiative by the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. It aims to empower the rural poor by promoting self-employment through the organization of Self Help Groups (SHGs).
Launched in 1999 as the Swarnajayanti Grameen Swarojgar Yojana (SGSY), it evolved from the restructuring of the Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP). NRLM replaces SGSY, addressing its shortcomings and emphasizing self-employment for the upliftment of rural communities.
